About
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans are a Minor League Baseball team in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and the Single-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. From their inaugural season through 2010, they were affiliated with the Atlanta Braves before spending four seasons as a Texas Rangers affiliate from 2011 to 2014. The team’s current affiliation with the Chicago Cubs began in 2015. The Pelicans compete in the Carolina League against the likes of the Augusta GreenJackets, the Charleston RiverDogs, and the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers. The Pelicans have been members of the Carolina League since 1999 and most recently won the league’s championship in 2016.
Notable Former Players
The Pelicans have had multiple notable alumni rise through the ranks and have successful MLB careers. Marcus Giles played for the Pelicans in 1999, where he won the League MVP. He would go on to be a National League All-Star. His double-play partner, Rafael Furcal, who played with him on the 1999 team, followed his teammate into the majors and had a successful career by his side. There was also Freddie Freeman, a first baseman for the Los Angeles Dodgers who was named the National League MVP in 2020 and is still a part of the incredible Dodgers team today.
